It’s better to give than to receive. Kindergarten students at Layton Elementary experienced the magic of the season with an early holiday surprise. A youth group from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints brought joy and smiles by gifting each child an early Christmas present. This heartwarming “Sub for Santa” event is quickly becoming a cherished tradition for the group of 12- to 18-year-olds. “It wasn’t us paying for everything; the kids brought their own money,” said Youth Leader Mark Baer. “You look around and see these youth engaging with the young kids, and it’s really fun.” Each student unwrapped gifts of Play-Doh, books, hats and gloves, while goodie bags filled with small toys added even more festive cheer. Although youth leaders considered trying new traditions—like ice skating—they quickly realized how much this event means to everyone involved. Their goal, keep spreading the spirit of giving and holiday magic for years to come.

Sunset Junior High’s Dollar Wars week was a HUGE success, raising $16,568.24 for various causes such as Sub for Santa Teen Center and other needs as identified by the school's Counseling Center. From Lottery Day to Shave It or Save It, students got creative and competitive, making every day a fun challenge. Highlights included Doubles Day, where donations were worth double points, and Golden Ticket Day, where $1 = 2 raffle tickets! The biggest moment? Three brave basketball players volunteered to shave their heads— and they all went through with it! The boys even joined the cheerleaders for a dance at the assembly to keep the energy high. We couldn’t be more proud of the Sunset community for raising an incredible amount in just one week!

Snow Horse Elementary and Sunburst Elementary have earned the prestigious Apple Distinguished School designation for the second time, for the 2024-2027 period. This accomplishment places both schools among an exclusive group of only 889 schools across 37 countries worldwide to hold the title. Only three schools in Utah have earned this honor and all three schools are part of Davis School District. The award is given to schools that demonstrate excellence in innovation, leadership and educational effectiveness through the integration of technology into the learning environment. Schools must show how they are using Apple products and resources to foster creativity, enhance student engagement and prepare students for success in a rapidly evolving world. “The award is not based solely on how technology is utilized,” said Sunburst Elementary Principal Rachel Alberts. “A school must have a culture that embraces risk-taking, equitable access and engaging learning opportunities. This would not be possible without our highly skilled and dedicated teachers.” Snow Horse Elementary Principal Jenne Talbot said, “Earning the Apple Distinguished School designation reflects the dedication, innovation, and teamwork of our entire community. This award highlights not only our commitment to integrating technology into learning but also the hard work our staff and students have put into building a forward-thinking environment where every child can thrive.” The district is incredibly proud of the dedication of the staff, students and communities at Snow Horse Elementary and Sunburst Elementary. Earning the Apple Distinguished School designation for 2024-2027 is a testament to their commitment, effort and dedication to educational excellence.

South Davis Junior High’s food drive was a huge success. The school’s Student Body Officers organized a month-long drive to benefit the Bountiful Food Pantry. The class that collected the most food won the grand prize—early release to attend the Fall Festival and free pizza. Miss Naegle’s 8th grade U.S. History class took first place.
